Today I am removing the badge that Honors fallen Referee John Bieniewicz. Two weeks ago today John was killed while officiating an adult soccer game in Livonia. It is time to honor John through our actions on the field and in life. It doesn't mean we forget what happened two weeks ago, it means that each time we step onto the soccer field that we remember John and what sacrifice he made for each one of us referees, players, coaches and parents. In this tragedy we must find the silver lining, and for me the silver lining is about making soccer better, creating programs that educate referees, players, coaches and fans. It is not just about raising money, but about creating awareness and ultimately accountability.
My message
Players every time you step onto a soccer field you make a conscious effort to RESPECT other players and coaches. Make an effort to learn the rules of soccer and not just how to play. Also keep in mind that we need more referees and you are the future of refereeing in this country.
Parents every time your son or daughter plays in a soccer game, you make a conscious effort to cheer and root for your child and team. You refrain from any negative or crude actions towards a player, fan, coach or official. Remember our children are watching and listening to what goes on at these games. Also, don't be afraid to tell another parent or fan to refrain from these negative and crude actions as well.
Coaches be teachers and role models, educate your players on the rules of soccer and not just how to play soccer. Teach them to RESPECT the officials of a soccer match, remember good coaches lead by example. Talk with your parents and fans and let them know that negative and crude actions towards other players, coaches and officials is unacceptable and hold them accountable when they cross the line.
We can not let the death of a soccer referee be in vain. We ALL must take this opportunity to learn and grow from this tragedy. I know that none of us ever want to hear about another soccer referee who was killed as a result of officiating a soccer game. As a soccer community lets make the game of soccer safer and more enjoyable for every one.
